In the spectral world, few entities can stir up as much chaos in our lives as poltergeists. As someone with over 15 years of experience in the field, I'm often inundated with queries about these noisy spirits and how to effectively banish them.

Knowing how to expel it is essential when a spirit begins to act with malice or mischief.

The term ‘poltergeist,’ derived from German, literally translates to ‘noisy ghost,’ and they certainly live up to their name. Whether you believe in their existence or not, the experiences of many suggest a reality that’s hard to ignore.

Imagine this: you’re sitting in your living room when suddenly your hair is yanked, or your clothes tighten inexplicably around you. You feel an invisible hand slap, push, or scratch you.

Objects around your home vanish, only to reappear in the most unlikely places. Glasses shatter without reason, plates move of their own accord, and your television turns on and off at will.

You might even find your home inexplicably flooded, hear disembodied screams, or feel an unseen presence slip into bed beside you. Yes, it’s as creepy as it sounds.

Signs of a Poltergeist

Poltergeists can be more than just a nuisance; they can make life downright unbearable.

Intriguingly, these entities rarely attempt to communicate with the inhabitants of the homes they haunt and seem to have no attachment to their chosen locations.

This makes them one of the most challenging types of ghosts to eliminate, as discerning their desires or motivations is nearly impossible.

They can appear and disappear without warning, leaving no clue as to why they chose a particular house, what drives their behavior, or what prompts their sudden departure.

However, knowledge is power, and fear is the greatest adversary in the paranormal realm.

It’s worth noting that what may seem like ghostly activity can often be attributed to more mundane issues, such as electrical problems.

If your lights are flickering inexplicably, it might be wise to call an electrician before a ghost hunter

Similarly, high-frequency electromagnetic fields, known in the paranormal world as ‘fear cages,’ can cause hallucinations or tingling sensations. So, before you conclude that you have an unwelcome guest, it’s worth checking for these more earthly explanations.

But if all else fails, and the disturbances persist, you may indeed be dealing with a poltergeist. If that’s the case, read on.

Poltergeist physical manifestations

Physical Manifestations

Unlike their spectral counterparts, poltergeists have a notorious reputation for their tangible interactions with our world.

Their antics range from moving or hurling objects, manipulating lights or appliances, to creating audible disturbances such as knocks or taps. In extreme instances, poltergeists have been reported to inflict physical harm on people or pets, manifesting as scratches or shoves.

Another telltale sign of a poltergeist is the inexplicable displacement of objects.

You may discover items in your home relocated from their usual spots, or objects mysteriously vanishing only to reappear in odd locations. In some cases, objects may even levitate or be flung across the room.

Emotional and Psychological Signs

Beyond the physical, poltergeists can also induce emotional and psychological disturbances

You might experience a sudden drop in temperature or a sense of unease or dread in certain areas of your home. Some people also report feeling watched or sensing a presence, even when they’re alone.

Poltergeists vs. Other Mischievous Spirits

While poltergeists are infamous for their mischief and physical interactions, they’re not the only spirits known for such disturbances. Other entities, like trickster spirits or certain types of fae, are notorious for mischievous behavior.

However, key differences can help distinguish a poltergeist from other spirits.

For one, poltergeist activity is often tied to a specific individual, known as the focus. This is typically a person under great stress or emotional turmoil. Other spirits usually aren’t as tied to one particular person.

However, I don’t want to go into detail on the differences between a poltergeist and other types of paranormal manifestations since I already have a whole article on the topic: What Is the Difference Between Poltergeists, Ghosts and Other Entities?

The Role of a Medium or Psychic in Identifying Poltergeists

medium or psychic can be an invaluable asset in identifying a poltergeist. These individuals often can sense or communicate with spirits, providing valuable insights into the entity’s nature and why it’s present.

A medium or psychic might be able to determine whether a poltergeist causes the activity or if it’s entirely another type of ghost. They can also provide guidance on how to deal with the poltergeist and potentially resolve the issues causing it to linger.

How to Deal with a Poltergeist

Try to Establish Some Form of Communitation

One of the first steps in dealing with a poltergeist is attempting to communicate with it.

This might sound daunting, especially since these manifestations are known for not wanting to communicate. Still, it’s often a crucial step in understanding why the poltergeist is present and what it might want.

Some believe poltergeists are often tied to a location or person due to unresolved issues or strong emotional ties. By communicating with the poltergeist, you might be able to understand these issues and help resolve them.

Communication can be as simple as speaking out loud in the area where the poltergeist is most active.

You might say something like, “I acknowledge your presence. If you have a message, please make it known.”

It’s essential to approach this communication with respect and an open mind. Some people also find it helpful to work with a medium or psychic during this process, as they may have skills or abilities to facilitate communication.

Ignoring the Poltergeist: Does it Work?

Another approach to dealing with a poltergeist is to simply ignore it. I don’t usually recommend doing this, but the theory behind this approach is that poltergeists feed off energy, particularly emotional energy.

By reacting strongly to a poltergeist’s activities, you might be giving it the energy it needs to continue its actions. By ignoring the poltergeist, you starve it of this energy, which might cause it to move on.

However, this approach isn’t always effective, particularly if the disturbance is tied to the location or person for a specific reason.

Ignoring the poltergeist won’t resolve these underlying issues, so it might not be a long-term solution.

Energy Healing and Space Cleansing

Energy healing and space cleansing are spiritual techniques that can be effective in dealing with a poltergeist.

Energy healing involves shifting and manipulating the energy within a person or space to promote healing and balance. This might involve practices like Reiki, chakra balancing, or other forms of energy work.

On the other hand, space cleansing involves clearing a space of negative or stagnant energy.

This simple practice involves burning sage or incense, using sounds like bells or singing bowls, or using blessed or holy water. The goal is to clear out any energy that might attract or sustain the poltergeist and create a positive, peaceful environment.

The Role of Therapy in Dealing with Poltergeists

Finally, therapy can play a crucial role in dealing with poltergeists. As mentioned earlier, poltergeists are often associated with high emotional stress or trauma levels.

Working with a therapist can help you manage this stress and work through any trauma, which might help to resolve the poltergeist activity.

Therapy can also help manage the fear and anxiety that often comes with experiencing a poltergeist. A therapist can provide strategies and techniques for managing these emotions, making the whole experience less distressing.

Ultimately, from my experience, dealing with a poltergeist often involves a combination of communication, ignoring the entity, spiritual practices, and therapy.

It’s essential to approach the situation with an open mind and to seek help if needed. Remember, you’re not alone in this, and there are resources and people out there who can help.

How to Remove a Poltergeist

The Role of a Home Healer or Spiritual Practitioner

When dealing with a poltergeist, it’s often beneficial to enlist the help of a professional. A home healer or spiritual practitioner can guide and assist in removing the entity.

These individuals often deeply understand spiritual energies and can use various techniques to cleanse your home and remove the poltergeist.

A home healer might use various methods to cleanse your home, including energy healing, smudging, sound therapy, and more. They can also advise how to maintain positive energy in your home to prevent future occurrences.

A spiritual practitioner, such as a medium or psychic, can also communicate with the poltergeist directly and determine why the poltergeist is present and what can be done to encourage it to move on.

Remote Clearing: What is it and How Does it Work?

The remote clearing is a technique some spiritual practitioners use to cleanse a space or person from a distance.

The practitioner will typically enter a meditative state and focus their energy on the location or person needing clearing. They might visualize the space being filled with light, or use specific prayers or intentions to cleanse it.

While this might sound a bit out there, many people have reported positive results from remote clearings. It’s a technique that requires a deep understanding of energy work and a strong connection to the spiritual realm.

If you’re open to it, a remote clearing could be a non-invasive way to address a poltergeist in your home.

Best poltergeist removal methods

Smudging, Incense, and Holy Water for Poltergeist Removal

Smudging is a traditional Native American practice that involves burning certain herbs, often sage, to cleanse a space or person of negative energy.

The smoke from the herbs is thought to carry away any negative energy, leaving the space cleansed and balanced.

Incense can be used in a similar way. Certain scents, like frankincense and sandalwood, are thought to have cleansing properties. Burning incense can help create a peaceful, positive atmosphere in your home.

Holy water is another powerful tool for spiritual cleansing. It’s often used in religious rituals to bless and purify.

You can sprinkle holy water around your home, focusing primarily on any areas where you’ve noticed poltergeist activity.

Prayers and Blessings

Prayer can be a powerful tool in dealing with a poltergeist. Many people find comfort and strength in their faith during challenging times. Praying for protection, peace, and guidance can provide a sense of control and hope.

You might pray to a higher power of your understanding, asking for help in removing the poltergeist and protecting your home. You might also ask for blessings on your home, which may be a place of peace and safety.

In addition to personal prayer, consider having a religious leader bless your home.

Depending on your faith tradition, this could be a priest, minister, rabbi, imam, or other religious leader. A house blessing can provide peace and security; many believe it can help ward off negative entities like poltergeists.

When to Seek Help from a Professional

The Role of a Paranormal Consultant or Exorcist

While some individuals may feel comfortable addressing a poltergeist situation on their own, there are times when professional help is necessary

Paranormal consultants or exorcists have extensive knowledge and experience dealing with supernatural entities like poltergeists. They can provide valuable guidance and assistance in navigating this challenging situation.

A paranormal consultant can help identify the type of entity you’re dealing with, provide insights into why it might be present, and suggest strategies for removing it.

They often use various tools and techniques, including electronic devices to detect paranormal activity, rituals or ceremonies to cleanse the space, and methods to communicate with the entity.

An exorcist, often a religious figure, is specifically trained to expel demonic entities.

While poltergeists are not typically considered demons, an exorcist might be called upon in severe cases where the entity is particularly malevolent or resistant to other removal methods.

Seeking Help from a Religious Leader

In many cultures and religions, spiritual leaders play a significant role in dealing with supernatural entities.

Priests, ministers, rabbis, imams, and other religious figures often have rituals and prayers specifically designed to cleanse a space and banish negative entities.

If you’re a person of faith, reaching out to a leader in your religious community can provide comfort and practical assistance.

They can perform a blessing on your home, offer prayers for protection, and provide guidance and support during this challenging time.

What to Expect During a House Cleansing

professional house cleansing removes negative entities and energy from a home. The specific methods used vary greatly depending on the professional’s background and expertise.

However, most house cleansings involve thoroughly examining the home, using certain tools or substances (like incense, holy water, or sage), and reciting prayers or affirmations.

During a house cleansing, the professional will likely move room by room, performing their cleansing rituals. They may also ask you about your experiences in the home, looking for clues about the poltergeist’s behavior and possible reasons for its presence.

Post-Cleansing Steps and Precautions

After a house cleansing, it’s crucial to maintain a positive and peaceful atmosphere in the home.

This might involve regular prayer or meditation, positive affirmations, and maintaining a clean and orderly home. Some people also like to use protective symbols or objects, like crosses, amulets, or crystals, to ward off negative energy.

Monitoring the home for any signs of the poltergeist’s return is also crucial.

If you notice any unusual activity, it’s a good idea to contact the expert who performed the cleansing for further guidance.
